Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain rulings from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
