What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
