As stated by a high-ranking military official, the US armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.

“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”

Background and Recent Actions

This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military buildup.

Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Defends Tactics Amid Scrutiny

The government has faced growing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.

Although the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”

This indicates the series of strikes may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
