Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee while the Nuggets fell by a score of 147-123 at the Miami Heat.
Jokic sustained the injury in the latter stages of the opening half following an accidental collision with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.
The other player landed on the foot of the MVP, and he immediately went down to the floor holding his knee.
The star, who tops the NBA this season in rebounds and dimes, recorded 21 points and eight assists in the contest before suffering the injury.
The player will have an scan on the following day to assess the extent of the injury.
"Immediately, Jokic realized there was a problem," said Denver head coach Adelman.
"This is part of the NBA. Anyone that suffers an injury, that's tough to see, particularly a player as special as Jokic. More information will come on Tuesday."
"We will continue together. Obviously, right now, I'm focused primarily about him personally and the disappointment of going through something like that."
