The Precious Metal Rises Beyond $4,000 in a Historic First; Automotive Retailer Vertu Motors Alerts of £5.5m Profit Hit from JLR Disruption

Good morning, and welcome to our live reporting of financial markets, the stock markets and the global economy.

Gold Reaches Historic $4,000 Milestone

The price of gold has risen above $4,000 an ounce for the first occasion, continuing a climb driven by worries over political uncertainty in the Japanese market, France and the United States, where the federal shutdown has continued.

Gold spot prices advanced by 1.15% to $4,029.46 an ounce, yet another historic level, and is higher fifty percent so far this year. This is after increases of 27% last year and 13% the year before.

The safe-haven asset is seen as a protective asset in periods of uncertainty, and also used as a protection against growing cost pressures.

Financial Sentiment and Expert Opinions

Financial investor Ray Dalio equated the present time to the 1970s era when soaring inflation and high government debt levels and outlays eroded trust in different holdings.

It resembles the early ’70s ... how do you allocate your money?
Gold is a very excellent diversifier in the asset allocation. If you examine it just from a long-term investment strategy viewpoint, you would perhaps have something like 15% of your holdings in gold … because it is a single asset that excels when the standard elements of the portfolio fall.

Market demand for gold-related assets seems undiminished. Traders have been investing heavily in gold exchange-traded funds with inflows reaching $64bn so far this year, as reported by the gold industry body, with a unprecedented $17.3bn in September alone. Central banks have also been buying gold.

Reasons Explaining the Gold Rally

Anticipations of further US interest rate cuts, worries over global instability, import duties and an artificial intelligence speculation, along with a declining US currency have propelled the precious metal climb.

A commodities strategist, market expert at a banking group, said:

Gold has undergone a historic rally, increasing twofold in a short period, spurred by central bank buying as it diversifies away from the American currency, the administration’s protectionist measures and disputes in the Middle East and Ukraine.
In the future, monetary authorities are acquiring more – the People’s Bank of China extended its purchasing run in the previous month for an extended period despite all-time peaks – the trade conflict is continuing, geopolitical risks remain elevated, and fund investments continue to expand while anticipations of further easing grow. This entire situation indicates that gold has more potential for growth.

Automotive Group Alerts of Earnings Hit

The British car dealership group Vertu has reported a £5.5m reduction in its full-year income from “significant disruption” to its JLR retail outlets after the car company paused production for several weeks following a crippling cyber attack.

The company’s CEO Robert Forrester said it was a setback for the sector to experience significant issues across the JLR network” during September, a key month for vehicle sales as registration identifiers are updated.

Whilst the situation is fluid, it looks to be resolving in recent days.

Vertu, which is based in the North East, announced record half-year sales of over two and a half billion pounds for the six months to the end of August, increased from £2.47 billion a year earlier. Adjusted pre-tax profit dropped by ten percent to twenty million pounds.
