The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
