The first preview for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has made its debut. Would you believe that, similar to many of Disney's real-life reinterpretations, it appears a lot like an animated film and much less like a true film with real actors?
Breathtaking Imagery That Keep an Cartoonish Look
The preview for the new version of Moana is certainly stunning. It features sweeping visuals, gorgeous soundtrack, and familiar characters. Yet, it still appears like an animated film. The exaggerated visuals depict characters flying, water acting unnaturally, and Maui transforming into both a bug and a bird. All of this is achieved through computer-generated imagery and computer animation. Much like previous Disney remakes—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of CGI is so high that it raises the debate: what makes these films “real-life” other than the marketing label?
Narrative and Music Audiences Adore
Regardless, this new Moana appears to be a reimagining of the original tale, complete with fresh versions of the beloved musical numbers. As described in an released synopsis, “Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”
New Performers and Familiar Stars
Meanwhile, the trailer features a sample of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” performed by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actress is taking over the role of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the character in the original films.
One person who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be playing Maui. Of course, that character already resembled Johnson, so casting him in the real-life version seems reasonable.
Fan Favorite Mascot Makes an Appearance
Arguably the most important part of the trailer comes in the last scene. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, squawking at the camera. What better way to present the film’s true icon?
Release Date
The live-action take of Moana debuts in theaters on July 10, 2026.
