Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
