The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
