Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
