Government Lowers US Flights as Government Closure Continues

As the unprecedented federal government standoff nears day 38, US airspace are set to become less congested. The same cannot be said for US terminals.

Protective Actions Enacted

The federal aviation regulatory body has said flights are being reduced to uphold air traffic control security during the federal government closure, setting a new duration record and with little indication of a resolution between Republicans and Democrats to end the federal budget impasse.

Flight oversight bodies pinpointed “high-volume markets” where the FAA says air traffic needs cutting by 4% by early morning Eastern Time on Friday, an action that will compel airlines to call off thousands of journeys and cause a cascade of scheduling complications and setbacks at major US air terminals.

Official Statement

The administration's transportation head, Sean Duffy, stated on X Thursday that the action was “unrelated to political motives” but rather “about assessing the data and mitigating building risk in the system as controllers continue working without pay”.

“Air travel remains secure today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the preventive measures we are taking,” Duffy remarked.

Airline Cutbacks

Analysts forecast numerous potentially thousands of flights may be scrapped. The cuts may constitute up to 1,800 flights and upwards of 268,000 seats combined, according to an estimate by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Targeted Terminals

The targeted air hubs covering numerous states include the busiest ones across the US – such as ATL, Charlotte, Denver, DFW, Orlando, Los Angeles, MIA and San Francisco. Among key urban centers – including NYC, Texas city and Chicago – multiple airports will be impacted.

All three airports operating in the DC metro – IAD, BWI Airport and DCA – will be involved, inevitably causing schedule changes for elected representatives as well as the flying public.

Other Developments

  • This is the compilation of American air terminals decreasing flights on Friday because of federal government shutdown.
  • A previous justice department staffer who threw a sandwich at a government officer during the current law enforcement increase in DC received a not guilty verdict of assault by a DC jury on Thursday in the latest legal rejection of the federal intervention.
  • Some Democratic legislators saw Tuesday’s big electoral wins as evidence they should maintain their position and gain maximum concessions from Republicans before approving the termination of the record-breaking budget standoff in history.
  • Democrats praised Nancy Pelosi as a “heroic, trailblazing” member of the US House of Representatives, an “symbol” and the “greatest speaker in American history”, after her declaration that following two decades in Congress she will leave office.
  • Kevin Roberts, the leader of the political research group behind the conservative initiative, issued an apology for endorsing the host's interview with Hitler fan Nick Fuentes, but is rejecting appeals to leave his position.
