Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

A recent term surfaced a couple of months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for doctors to attend to a child who has seen the death of their entire family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities disputes these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
